Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the ability to contest particular rulings from the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
