Lackluster Buatsi Defeats Parker in Manchester Bout

British light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi made a winning yet unimpressive beginning to his career under fresh promotional backing with a unanimous decision over Parker in Manchester.

The Olympic medal winner's punch output likely gained him a judges' verdict in a tight 10-round bout at the Co-op Live Arena.

But Parker landed significant shots, connecting with powerful individual punches in a contest where the techniques never quite clicked, with constant grabbing disrupting the contest.

The officials scored it 96-94 to Buatsi, with the final judge a 95-95.

"It wasn't my finest performance but what defines champions? They succeed," Buatsi said in the ring as he was greeted with negative reactions from the spectators.

The British fighter bounced back after his initial pro loss - an epic battle with Callum Smith in last winter - to secure a 20th career victory.

Some ringside observers felt Parker, thirty-one, merited the win but the British boxer experienced the second loss of his 28-bout professional journey.

The fighter's advancement has slowed in the past few years through promotional disputes and considerable time of inactivity.

Earlier forecast as the next star of the British fight scene, he now is positioned trying to realize his potential - possibly in what seems like a last chance - under fresh management.

He started carefully, with neither fighter ready to be aggressive in a calculated opening few rounds.

The challenger, whose single earlier setback came at super middleweight against John Ryder in 2022 after suffering a hand injury mid-fight, was competing in only his second bout at the higher weight class.

By the halfway stage, Parker had kept it close, creating difficulties for Buatsi, who operated with a protective stance to barely take the cleaner rounds.

The crowd's patience diminished because of constant clinching, with the challenger slipping to the canvas several times during close exchanges.

Parker ended stronger, but multiple periods were hard to judge. However, previous titleholder Carl Frampton - working with the broadcast network - had it strongly leaning for Parker, giving Buatsi just one round.

Buatsi advances, but with the presence of heavy hitter Benavidez, and Russian star Bivol leading the category, the road to world glory - judging by this showing - still looks steep.

Hatton Homage Inspires Manchester Derby Contest

In the secondary fight, Lyndon Arthur beat Bradley Rea by close verdict in a outstanding local rivalry fight to capture the continental title.

The venue became quiet for a profoundly moving homage prior to the bout as a bell ceremony tolled in honor of Manchester's own Hatton, who died 46 years old in recently.

It was the premier televised boxing event in the city since Hatton's passing. As the final chime faded, the silence became a chant of "only one Hatton".

The fighting during the bout equaled the sentiment. Arthur was floored by a powerful punch directly to the chin in the initial stage, rising shakily to his feet on the count of eight.

But the red-colored attire of Arthur soon advanced again. Across the ring, the opponent - in competitive blue - was marked up quickly, heavy swelling appearing under his eye as the pair exchanged powerful shots.

The challenger, 27, delivered effective strikes but Arthur, 34, fought fire with fire with powerful upward punches as the intensity seldom decreased over the full distance.

Arthur narrowly won the decision with official scores of draw, narrow lead and wider gap, but the two athletes were determined and courageous, all the qualities their idol the legend embodied.
