Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
However, some rightwing pundits and former President allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
