The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
